While dentures are a valuable option for those who have oral health problems and missing teeth, there are times where daily activities such as talking and eating can be a battle. Many denture wearers rely on glues and pastes to hold dentures in place, but they may still fall out, slip or slide at exactly the wrong time. One option for those who struggle with this are implant supported dentures, which are ideal for those with bone loss as they don’t require much bone to be placed.
What Are ISDs?
With implant supported dentures, dental implants are used to hold dentures securely in place. Your periodontist will place the implant directly in the jaw to preserve the bone. Anywhere from three to five dental implants can be used per jaw, and special dentures are fitted once the jaw heals around the area. The dentures are connected to the implants with metal studs or a metal bar.
What Makes a Good Candidate?
While this is not a good option for everyone, many patients can benefit from this surgical option. Good candidates are those who:
· Are healthy enough to go through surgery
· Have good oral health habits
· Have enough bone tissue to support the implant
· Have good general health
· Currently wear dentures
· Have missing teeth
· Are not happy with their removable dentures
Implant supported dentures feel and look natural, are more comfortable, make it easier to keep the mouth clean and improve confidence for those who wear dentures. If you have missing teeth and currently wear dentures but hate the fear of them slipping or falling out at inconvenient times, then this may be an option for you.
